38 – Have to – must do something – phải

In this lesson, we’ll learn how to use the verb Phải, which means “have to.”
subject + phải + verb
subject + không + phải + verb

Mấy giờ anh phải đi? Anh không phải đi làm hôm nay.
What time you (male) have to go/leave? I (male) don’t have to go to work today

What time do you have to go/leave? I don’t have to go to work today

Người Mỹ đến Việt Nam phải xin visa không?
people America come to VN have to ask for visa or no? Yes

Do Americans visiting Vietnam have to apply for visa? Yes

If it is mandatory to do something, such as “must”, you can use “bắt buộc phải” (caught and forced to do something)

Bệnh nhân bị đau tim bắt buộc phải đi cấp cứu
Patient hurt, pain heart must go emergengy

Heart attack patient must go to the emergency room (at the hospital)

Phải also means “right” as in “bên phải” (on the right) or rẽ phải (turn right).
